On
the left side of the vessel there is a mixture of two types of particles that
differ by mass 25 times. The velocity of the light particles (red color) is 5
times greater than the velocity of the heavy particles (blue color). The number
of particles which collide the area s of the wall in unit time is N = nvs/4,
where n is concentration of particles and v is the mean velocity. As a result
the light particles will collide the walls 5 times more often than the heavy
particles. Consequently they will hit a junction tube more often and
will diffuse into the right side of the vessel more rapidly than the heavy
particles. Red and blue cylinders indicate the number of particles of two types
passed into the right side of the vessel.
